Tonight I just completed the Career Genogram (which took quite a long time to get it perfect J) and I realized how much I loved doing the activity after the project was over. My family has always been so important to me and the fact that I had to do so much research with my mom by my side was very interesting and fulfilling. After my father passed away in 2003 we haven’t talked too much about his side of the family just for emotional reasons. This project brought to light a lot of little known facts about my dad’s side of the family because of the research that we had to do to find out their history.
I feel this project will benefit me with my career counseling with children because I realized a lot of my family work history and values are the same values that I have today with different endeavors that I choose to embark in. This helped me reinstate the fact that I want to be a counselor because I can help the students realize their full potential in their work and career force. The students will benefit from my career counseling sessions and will continue to be reminded how they need to keep a positive outlook on life with my guidance.
I understand your feelings about your father. My dad passed away 3 years ago and this brought back many emotions for me as well. I experienced feelings of sadness and pride as I remembered the way in which he lead his life. He taught me many things and I value each and every one of them. I can tell from your reflection that you value your relationship with your family. Your reflection is great and I appreciate you sharing your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteThis assignment was fulfilling for me as well. I loved listening to my mom talk about my family. As well, I didn't know much about my dad's side of the family like birthdays, jobs, etc. My dad's mom died when I was very young and I never knew much about her. It was great to hear about the kind of woman she was. It was also nice to talk with my dad about it. He's not very 'mushy' for lack of a better word and this assignment allowed him to reflect and laugh about the good ole days! :) Awesome work!
ReplyDeleteMy values too are a reflection of my family's. Education has always been highly valued through all the generations both as participants in and providers of. I too want to share these values with my students to help them reach their full potential.
ReplyDeleteThis assignment was difficult for me. I lost my dad when I was only 21 and then my mom four years ago. I had already lost my grandparents, so it was painful looking at all of family that are deceased. I do appreciate the work ethic that my parents and grandparents past down to me. I also agree with your statement about wanting to help others-that is also why I want to be a school counselor.
ReplyDeleteVeronica, we realized that going through this exercise would be painful for some. However, I think that you took away a powerful lesson in spite of the pain. You will be able to relate to the students you counsel who have pain in their lives. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
